“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
Do you ever view yourself as “less than”? Such a thought is often all too easy in our society. It’s especially easy to compare yourself to others shown in magazines and TV who have achieved incredible success or don’t have a single ounce of fat on their bodies. Such comparison tends to bring about negative thoughts and you may feel you are “less than” because you don’t have multi-millions or a six-pack. This also applies to Christianity – it’s all too easy to feel unimportant in the Kingdom of God if you still feel guilty for a specific sin or if you haven’t sacrificed a decade of your life to serve in a third-world country.
This negative comparison is one of Satan’s most effective tools. It is a win for him if he can convince you that you are worthless and aren’t worthy of God’s love and mercy. Thankfully, Scripture tells us a different story: “…but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God views you as so highly valuable that He sent His own Son to die so you can live free from sin – you are of far greater value than rubies. He treasures you as a being created in His own image, and He sees you as blameless if you’ve committed your life to Christ.
Lord, help me to see myself as You see me. Help me to remember that Jesus bore all of my sins on the cross, and I have no need to feel guilty or “less than” because of past mistakes. Guide me to become more like Christ as time goes on, and in turn see the great value You see in each and every person.
